Zubia Mumtaz
Zubia Mumtaz’s work is centered in the area of global maternal and reproductive health, with a focus on developing innovative solutions to alleviate the persisting high maternal mortality rates in countries with fragile health systems. Working principally Pakistan and Malawi, her research program addresses three inter-related facets of the issue: a critical examination of how gender inequity, poverty, and social exclusion converge to place some women in socially marginalized positions; how these inequities perpetuate the chronic susceptibility of marginalized women to heightened morbidity and mortality and assessing health systems performance in delivery of maternal/reproductive health services for these marginalized women. In partnership with governments and NGOs, she aims to understand the health system and policy dynamics that determine coverage and quality of maternal health services in community and facility-based initiatives in remote, rural areas.
