    Bertrand Routy, MD PhD

    Assistant Professor of Medicine, Scientific Director, Immunotherapy/Oncomicrobiome, University of Montreal; Canada Research Chair, Immunotherapy

    Dr. Bertrand Routy MD, PhD is a young clinician-scientist (FRQS J1) and assistant professor in the hemato-oncology department at the CHUM (University of Montreal) with clinical experience in lung cancer. Since 2018, he has directed the onco-microbiome laboratory at the CRCHUM and the thoracic oncology biobank. Dr. Routy was instrumental in discovering the key role of the microbiome in the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy and the deleterious impact of antibiotics. Dr. Routy focuses on the use of the microbiome as a novel biomarker for the efficacy of immunotherapy as well as on strategies to change the composition of the microbiome in oncology. He is now leading microbiome-centered clinical trials. His research has led to the publication of more than 70 articles in journals such as Science, Nature Medicine and Annals of Oncology with more than 8,364 citations and h-index of 27. His laboratory is funded by several provincial and national grants as well as the Canada Research Chair of immunotherapy. In 2021, Dr. Routy received the Best Young Investigator Award from the University of Montreal and the Gairdner Foundation Early Career Investigator Award.

    Dr. Sarah Elton researches at the intersection of health, ecosystems and food in the city. She foregrounds the human relationship to nonhuman nature in her work. Dr. Elton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at X University (the university is being re-named) and is also appointed to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. She is an academic fellow at the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research at the University of Toronto and is a member of the Centre for Studies in Food Security. Her scholarly research has been published in Social Science and Medicine, Critical Public Health, Canadian Food Studies, Gastronomica, Environmental Humanities and is forthcoming in the Canadian Journal of Public Health. Her two award-winning books, Locavore: From Farmers’ Fields to Rooftop Gardens, How Canadians are Changing the Way We Eat and Consumed: Food for a Finite Planet are Canadian bestsellers.

    My lab focuses on elucidating the chemosensory signalling mechanisms in gastrointestinal epithelial cells. We utilize molecular, imaging and electrophysiological techniques in our studies. Our research will provide mechanistic insights to how nutrients and the gut microbiome contribute to gastrointestinal and overall human health.
