Canada Research Chair in Inflammatory Pain
Dr. Christophe Altier is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine.
He holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Inflammation and Pain and is a full member of the Calvin, Phoebe, and Joan Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases.
Dr. Altier earned his Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Montpellier in 2002. His research focuses on the neurobiology of pain, particularly the plasticity of nociceptors in chronic diseases such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer. By combining molecular biology, imaging, electrophysiology, and behavioral analysis in mouse models, his team investigates signaling pathways that mediate pain or promote its resolution.
Dr. Altier's work aims to discover novel pain biomarkers and signal transducers that could be targeted for treatment. He also explores the role of bacteria and their metabolites in pain sensitivity using germ-free and gnotobiotic mouse models. Dr. Altier has published extensively in the field of pain and inflammation, contributing to the understanding of ion channel regulation and neuroinflammation.
He is actively involved in the Inflammation Research Network at the Snyder Institute, serving as its chair.
